Random Acts of Kindness

Sometimes, the world can seem like it’s full of horrible things. With so much negativity in the world (just from looking at the BBC News front page, I see attacks around the world, needless deaths and robberies), it can often feel like there is no positivity left in the world; sadness and anger sells more than happiness, after all.

Yet, when you scratch a little deeper, there are people spreading happiness, love and kindness around the world. I came across an article today, which really did make me smile. It showed grand and small acts of kindness. You can read the article here at Bored Panda. After I read this, I started looking around for more acts of kindness; I found people opening their doors to refugees, people handing food parcels out to vulnerable people, children learning to spread positivity and compliments to one another at school.

It got me thinking about life. We end up so wrapped up in our own bubbles that we often forget people around us. We forget that giving someone a compliment might just make their day. We forget that sometimes, a smile is all someone needs. We forget that sometimes, just listening to someone is the first step on the road to happiness, for them and you. With this in mind, I am setting myself a challenge for the month of December; to complete 25 Random Acts of Kindness between now and Christmas. As Andy Williams once sang, it’s the most wonderful time of the year; a time when people are generally already feeling positive and caring.

Some of them may be big, some may be small. Some may cost money, some may be free. It shouldn’t be difficult, or considered a challenge to do something nice, or kind, for the people around us, yet that’s what I’m calling it. I am hoping that, through doing this, I will reconnect with the positivity in the world.

So, I’d like to invite you to join me; I’d love to hear what you do over the next month or so – keep a journal of all the Random Acts of Kindness you manage to complete, whether it’s 2 or 25, for family, friends or strangers you meet over the next month, post comments on here when you do them, or let me know via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

If you want some ideas, people have written some pretty excellent articles:

Spread some happiness and positivity. After all, we are all human; we all crave a little bit of kindness.
